YouTube’s Hispanic audience has grown 80% this past year and the company has taken notice: on Monday, the influential social media site announced a deal to make programming from Univision’s networks available on YouTube:

YouTube described the deal, the latest in a series of agreements with owners of professionally-produced programming, as one of its most comprehensive agreements for TV content. The agreement is nonexclusive and includes short clips as well as full-length TV shows from Univision’s three networks, Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision.

via YouTube + Univision = TuTube – Bits Blog – NYTimes.com.

YouTube has previously reached agreements with companies like CNN, TNT, ABC, and Warner Music Group; this recent deal appears part of a trend by YouTube to make professional programming available through its site.

The noteworthy aspect of this transaction is that Univision plans to offer full-length shows on YouTube, something which major American networks generally shy away from on YouTube; they tend to offer such content on Hulu.com or on their own network sites.

It will be interesting to see whether this portends a shift in television interaction with social media, or whether it’s a one-off transaction.

The announcement on the Twitter blog, is written entirely in Spanish (here’s an English translation, with an assist from from Google Translate):

Earlier this month we invited volunteers to translate Twitter into more languages. Thanks to these enthusiastic Spanish-speaking volunteers, Twitter is now officially available in Spanish. You can change the language or visit Twitter.com settings and change the language setting in the option at the bottom right corner.

Some Spanish-speaking users like Pepe Aguilar (@ PepeAguilar), Manu Ginobili (@ manuginobili), Jose Hernandez (@ Astro_Jose), Andreu Buenafuente (@ buenafuente), Juan Fonseca (@ Fonseca) and La Moncloa in Spain (@ desdelamoncloa) discovered the value in Twitter even before we released the translated version. We hope that offering Twitter in Spanish means more people will be able to access and enjoy this service.

Welcome!

This is a competitive move by Twitter. Recently, several microblogging sites have begun to offer Spanish-language services, including Yahoo Meme (language options are on the right side of the footer) and the recently-launched and currently unavailable Birddi. Other entrepreneurs have also begun offering Twitter-like services in different languages. Until this launch, Twitter was only offered in English or Japanese, but French, German and Italian are also on the agenda for future language offerings.

From our perspective, this is just further confirmation that multicultural social media is here to stay.
